Dr. Lucius Merrill was born in 1857 in Orono. He attended the University of Maine and graduated in the class of 1883. From 1885-1887, he worked as assistant curator, Department of Lithology and Physical Geography at the U.S. National Museum. He joined the UMaine Experiment Station in 1887 as an analytical chemist.
